2007-2008 NBA Preview: Atlantic Division

It's that time of year again! With training camp fully underway and preseason action tipping off, it's time to take a look around the league. First up:

Atlantic Division:

A Much Needed Roster Upgrade

After years of mediocrity the Boston Celtics completed a huge makeover to their roster. Bypassing the youth movement, the Celtics now boast a lineup that includes Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. Rounding out the starting five is Kendrick Perkins, who is in his 5th year straight from HS and Rajon Rondo, a 2nd year player from Kentucky. Perkins has a job that will be very clearly defined. Defend the basket and steer clear, so that the stars can shine. Rondo on the other hand, will go a long way in determining how far the Celtics advance in the playoffs. As the starting point guard, it is Rondo’s job to make sure the ball is moving, and that the stars are kept happy with the amount of touches they are receiving.

Question Marks

The two main question marks facing the Celtics heading into this season are depth and chemistry. Anytime you’re involved in a 5 for 1 trade, you are giving up a large part of your current roster to land a player like Kevin Garnett. The Celtics have added James Posey, Eddie House and Scott Pollard, to go along with Tony Allen, but that isn’t enough pop coming off the bench.

Chemistry will be the big thing that determines how far the Celtics advance in the playoffs. Garnett, Pierce and Allen have all achieved enough individually that you’d expect personal goals to be put aside for the betterment of the team’s success. I’m interested to see whose hands the ball is in down the stretch. Do they throw the ball on the block to KG and let him go to work? Clear the court and isolate Paul Pierce at the top of the key? Setup a high screen and roll with Ray Allen and KG? These are good problems to have, but things worth taking note of…

Overall

Anytime you have 3 legitimate all-stars, you put yourself in immediate contention to compete for a ring. KG is focused and should dominate in the Eastern Conference. If the stars can gel, with the role players following suit, the Boston Celtics have all pieces to make a run for the title. If not, all the talent in the world can’t win you the championship without everyone on the same page. The Celtics will make a push, but I don’t see them coming out of the East.

Off-season

Here’s the problem with the New Jersey Nets. The #1 off season priority was to sign Vince Carter to an extension. Mission accomplished. Now you have the same team as last season that got bounced in the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Outside of drafting Sean Williams and signing Jamaal Magloire, the Nets made no real acquisitions to take this ball club to the next level.

I’ve spoken previously about Vince Carter’s commitment or lack thereof. Net fans can only hope he plays with more passion than we’ve seen in the past.

Down Low

Jason Kidd is a winner and any team that he’s on will be competitive regardless of who the other guys are around him. Add Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson and you have a solid 1, 2, and 3 that can compete with any other perimeter combo in the league. This has never been the problem. The main issue is the Nets continue to lack a post presence. Boasting a front line of Nenad Kristic - coming off ACL surgery, Jamaal Magloire, Jason Collins, Josh Boone and rookie Sean Williams, won’t get the job done. None of the aforementioned interior players have the ability to create for themselves and give the Nets the inside play they need.

Overall
The Nets are a veteran club that is going to compete every night. J-Kidd is getting up there in age, but he hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down. He’s a winner, a leader, and will do what it takes to lead the Nets back into the postseason. Unfortunately, the post season will only consist of a few games, as the Nets contain too many question marks on the frontline to make a serious run.

Upgrades

One thing about Isiah Thomas which can’t be disputed is that he’s a very active President. This off-season was no different as Zach Randolph was brought in to add another post player to the Knicks lineup. From day 1, I haven’t been in love with this move, because it fails to address the Knicks most pressing need, a defensive presence. It just seems like the Knicks continue stock piling talent instead of addressing deficiencies in their lineup. Zach Randolph brings exactly the same skills to the Knicks as current center, Eddy Curry. Neither player plays defense and both players need to continually see the rock, before they’re able to get going.

*See below… Stephon Marbury provides superb analysis following the Zach Randolph acquisition*

The Love in NY

The people of New York are so passionate about Knicks basketball and have always supported their hometown team. The problem with this crop of Knick players is that the fans don’t feel a connection. In the past, the Knicks had players like Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason, John Starks and Patrick Ewing. People loved coming to MSG because they knew the players would give 100% every single night. They’d sacrifice their bodies taking the charge, diving into the stands, and doing whatever was necessary to get the “W”. This current Knicks team is filled with tattooed thugs, who rarely give you anything to cheer about, often times looking depressed on the sidelines with towels draped over their faces. This negative vibe surrounding the Knicks will make it that much tougher to maintain the advantage the Knicks once held, a rocking MSG.

Overall

I expect an improvement, but not a major one. The Knicks don’t have any players committed to playing defense and lack a superstar to give the fans something to get excited about. The Knicks will manage to sneak into the playoffs, but don’t expect anything more than a quick 1st round exit.

The Post AI Era

Since the departure of Allen Iverson from Philadelphia, the 76ers are heading in a different direction. Figuring they couldn’t win while they had a veteran superstar, they’ve decided to give their youngsters a shot to lead the team. The 76ers have some talent led by Andre Igoudala, who not only has the right initials for this city, but the game to go with it. He plays hard on both ends of the court and will continue to emerge as he becomes the focal point of the offense. Andre Miller gives the 76ers a legit point guard who can run the team and Samuel Dalembert controls the paint defensively.

Youth Movement

Philadelphia is relying heavily on inexperienced players like Louis Williams (straight from HS – best known for being homeboys with Bow Wow), Willie Green, and Rodney Carney to step up and take on a bigger role this season. Having all shown a glimpse of what they’re capable of, it’s now time for these guys to prove themselves on a nightly basis.

Overall

Are the 76ers good enough to compete in the East? No… Plain and simple.
Despite having a potential star in Andre Igoudala, the 76ers are just not good enough to get into the postseason. A projected frontcourt that includes Samuel Dalembert, Reggie Evans, Shavlik Randolph and Calvin Booth is not going to cut it. It’s straight to the lottery for Philly.

High Expectations

At the beginning of last season, the outlook for the Toronto Raptors was real bleak. Nobody was expecting much from the fellas up North, but they sure surprised everyone. This season will be a new challenge. Coming off a successful campaign that included an Atlantic Division title and a trip to the playoffs, how will the Raptors respond to the raised expectations?

Current Roster

There might not be a deeper team in the NBA. They have a star in Chris Bosh, a rock solid point guard in TJ Ford, and a youngster with potential in Andrea Bargnani. Aside from those three, it’s a collection of decent NBA players that fills the roster. On any given night they have a slew of players that can step up including one of their international players Jorge Garbajosa, Jose Calderon, Radoslav Nesterovic and recently acquired Carlos Delfino.

Overall

I’m going to refrain from calling last season a fluke, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a major decline coming from last season’s record. The Raptors failed to add any players to significantly bolster their roster, while many of their Atlantic Division counterparts were upgrading. The Raptors have the depth, but don’t have enough firepower around Chris Bosh, to make me believe otherwise. The Raptors are heading back to familiar territory, the lottery.

i have to say one of the all time lines is said by stephon marbury in that interview when he refers to Zach Randolph as a "youthier" player - i mean that is classic starbury!

You have to remeber that nenad kristic was injured half the season last year and missed the post season. With the combination of Nenad and jamal maglore, that is a good offensive combination inside. Then you have Sean Williams off the bench for defense, and Josh boone for energy. I beleive Vince Carter will try a lot harder because he is happy with the Nets.

as a nets fan signing VC to an extension was a waste of $. just like JB said the same cast of characters who got bounced in the 1st round.. nenad is still injured and jamal maglore really doesnt bring much to the table. the bench must play big this year. Antoine wright is rumored to have a HuGe season. stay tuned....geeeeesh

Raptors going to the lottery?? Nicks going to the playoffs?? wow...why do you even have a blog? You're fooling people into believing that you have the slightest bit of basketball knowledge. However, this is clearly not the case.

Signing the #1 three point shooter (percentage wise) Isn't adding to the roster? Getting a shot blocker, rebounder, and adding him to the roster isn't an upgrade? Take into consideration their age. Look at their GM. How about you learn something, watch a game or two, then say the Raptors are a lottery team. Wow you're not a bright one are ya?

Anonymous,

Last season the Atlantic Division was awful, hence the reason the Raptors looked so good. Put them in the West and they dont finish in the Top 12 teams and that's a fact.

In the offseason, while the Raptors Atlantic Division counterparts were making significant upgrades, the Raptors were standing pat. Yes, they added players like Carlos Delfino and Jason Kapono, but these guys are MINOR role players. The Raptors are not good enough to make small changes. They need more quality ball players around Bosh.

Email me in a month when you get to watch Kapono play defense. He couldnt guard you.

The Raptors dont even have a wing player that can create his own shot, or get easy buckets for Bosh. They have stand still shooters on the perimeter. You can't expect to advance in this league without top perimeter players.

Glad you enjoy the blog.

Only significant upgrade by the Knicks is Randolph who you say "brings exactly the same skills to the Knicks as current center, Eddy Curry. Neither player plays defense and both players need to continually see the rock, before they’re able to get going." and all of a sudden you think that they can make up the 14 win difference between them and the Raps and get into the playoffs when the Raps are a year more experienced and will only get better??? I love hearing this garbage about how the Raps won't make the playoffs and that the only reason they did last year was cause the Atlantic was brutal. They only play 16 divisional games and were still 36-30 against non-divisional opponents. So will you mention how wrong you were when they win at least 48 games and make it to at least the 2nd round??

Jordan Brett said...

If the Raptors make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs, I will write a full page article explaining how wrong I was.

However, when they dont, which they wont - I expect you and every other Raptor fan to send me a letter explaining what went wrong. Including specifically the failure to make any offseason acquisitions. Please make sure to mention the huge disappoinment Jason Kapono was this season.

Mr. Brett says "Last season the Atlantic Division was awful, hence the reason the Raptors looked so good."

Man... once again you are showing that your inferior basketball knowledge. Teams from the central like the Bulls, Pistons and the Cavs played more games against teams from the Atlantic than the Raptors did. Now if the Raptors won the divison with 37 wins then you would have an argument but saying the Atlantic division sucks and that is why the Raptors looked good, is a flawed argument. Please check your facts and feel free to bring in some statistics but don't make stuff up.

P.S. I am not the same anonymous as the others so don't hold any of their arguments against me.

These Raptor fans have to be more realistic about their team. I could see the Raptors sneaking in as the 8th seed, but nothing more.

Isnt Bosh already hurt?

On an aside: JB, job well done on the site. It's my new #1 source. Love the All Time High School basketball piece and the NBA player wives. Brilliant.

First - if you would leave a name next to your posting, I could see who is who. This would prevent me from confusing you, with a highly educated basketball fan that calls the Knicks the Nick's?

Moving on.

As you will notice from the second sentence which you chose to exlude, "Put them in the West and they dont finish in the Top 12 teams and that's a fact," it was a comparison to the Western Conference.

The Raptors divisional record of 11-5, wouldnt be a reality in the West.

This season with other teams in the Atlantic Division upgrading their rosters (Celtics, Knicks) that 11-5 record will be tough to match.

Regardless, lets see what happens. I doubt ill be hearing from you in 2 months.

It's time to realize that anything Colangelo touches turns to gold. Kopono and Delfino were two great offseason acquisitions that further bolster the strength of the Raptors, that being their offense and shooting, two things of which you can never have enough of.

Sorry man,

I lost my log-in when Blogger joined with google. So I have to stick to anonymous. I understand the Western comment but your comment was about the Atlantic which was not a valid argument. Now looking at the 11-5 record, I also don't expect them to repeat that, the Atlantic and the East overall has gotten better. I still think that they will make the playoffs and they will not finish last in the division. I wish I could guarntee that I will be back to say I told you so but your blog isn't a site I frequent. Hopefully somebody will remind me.

The Knickerboppers load up with top talent every year but it never works. Sixers are still going to come in last, I don't care how good they did at the end of last season. The Raptors in the last few months had a top 3 record with the Mavs and Suns ahead of them in that span (I think in the 2 months before the last month, not positive.) They are going to come in second behind Boston, with New Jersey behind them. Finally followed with the Knicks and the Sixers.

The Raptors fans are on drugs. The Celts are taking the division with the Knicks and Nets right behind. Toronto has nobody to support Bosh who is already complainging of injuries. Ford is also fragile.

Good preview!

Absolutely hit this preview on the nose. My favorite line:

Louis Williams - straight from HS – best known for being homeboys with Bow Wow

Great stuff. Keep it up JB.

We have a long season!

I would agree with everything written on this preview. The point about Kapono and Delfino being minimal additions, I would completely agree with as well.

It appears Toronto fans are blind to the big picture.

For teams that dont need major acquisitions to compete for a ring, then fine, Delfino and Kapono might be considered quality additions.

For a team like Toronto you need more help.

Enjoy the read Jordan!

u are a moron... im a bulls fan since waaaayyy back but it still angered me that you could say that about the raptors. I hate the raptors... because they are that friggen scary... i cant wait to read your appoligy letter

think how young these guys are and they are growing together

Is one thing to say that the Raptors will finish 4th in the atlantic and out of the playoffs. Man I think your dead wrong. I dont think theyll necessarily be the a top 4 seed but there is no question the Raps are no lower than a 6th-8th seed in the east. I see them finishing 3rd in the Atlantis and probably 6/7 overall. They do have a ton of talent around BOsh also. They have Ford/calderon probably the top PG duo in the east. They have Bosh and up and coming Bargnani. They also have quite a bench. So I expect you writing your apology not if the Raptors dont make it past the second round but if they make it to the playoffs. Its one thing to say a team is a lottery team and its another thing is to say a team can move past the second round.

Take a look at some rankings by a guy who doesn't have his head up his ass. http://www.nba.com/powerrankings/index.html

Raptors at #9 overall, The fact that you said the Knicks will make the playoffs over the Raps kills your credibility. The east is tougher than last year which must mean the Knicks will win 10-15 games more than last year and make the playoffs....riiigggghhhtt.

Colin said...

Why does it matter that the Raptors didn't make any BIG offseason changes this year? Growing as a team and as players is what makes teams like San Antonio and Detroit dominant dynastys...with the exception of Miami, how many recent championship teams have acquired big name stars the year before winning??? very few. I am not saying the Raptors are Championship calibre.......yet. But the Raptors have a very young and talented core in Andrea Bargnani, TJ Ford, and Bosh (none of whom are older then 24) that are only going to improve this year (with Bargnani poised for a breakout season)..... The Raptors should finish no worse then second in the division, behind Boston (barring injury).

Please learn to do your research before posting articles like this one if you want to be taken seriously and gain respect as a basketball mind in the future.

Raptors out of the playoffs? knick in? Wow. Hos did this blog site get such a high PR rating?

Anonymous said...

Raps really arent getting any respect. Anyone with a bit of bb knowledge besdies the one acquired by watching stuff like NBA Jam or whatever that show is called can see that Raps have the deepest team in NBA, would have taken the Nets last year if they had Garbo (besides the fact that Nets always play best ball against TO), that they are much improved team from last year (and dont only look at additions) and will run circles around Boston and co. Besides Chicago, the only good team in the East, probably as serious contender for the over-all title next year as they are for East title this year....)

Anonymous said...

Good to see Raptor fans jumping all over this drivel. They will win the Atlantic division and push the Bulls to six in the Eastern finals.

Anonymous said...

This guy is an idiot! No way Knicks finish in front of Toronto in the division. No way Boston does either. Boston is a group of 3 players, Toronto is a team of 12 players. Best point guard duo and bench in the east. I expect your apology when the raptors are playing the bulls in the eastern finals. I probably will never end up reading it though because there is no shot in hell of me reading anything written by this guy again.

Anonymous said...

Amen to the dude above me. Put rondo on the raptors and he's your third point guard, probably doesn't crack the 12 man roster. Raps dropped the nets the other night, beat philly on wednesday and are gonna beat the celtics today. I hope the knicks finally get a defensive player in the lottery and i hope VC has fun sitting at home crying and watching the raps go all the way.
